The Physical Health and Disabilities teacher is a licensed teacher who provides assessment and consultation for students who have a broad range of medically diagnosed chronic or acute health conditions including traumatic brain injuries. Definition
Physically Impaired (PI) is a low incidence disability area represented by approximately 1% of all students in Minnesota receiving special education services. PI is defined as a medically diagnosed, chronic physical impairment—either congenital or acquired—that may adversely affect physical or academic functioning and result in the need for special education and related services (MN Rule 3525.1337).
Definition
Other Health Disabilities (OHD) is defined as a wide range of chronic or acute health conditions that may be either congenital or acquired. These health concerns may be mild or severe, progressive, and/or have symptoms that vary in intensity. Medications, treatments, and hospitalizations can affect a student's ability to learn. A student may be considered for special education under OHD if eligibility criteria are met (MR 3525.1333).
Definition
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability that could also include psychosocial impairment. The injury may adversely affect a student's performance. This does not apply to brain injuries that are congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma (MN Rule 3525.1348).
